The Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC), the Digicel Cup competition, will proceed with matches in Lae, Goroka and Port Moresby this weekend amidst the election related violence that is currently happening.

Round 13 of the semi-professional rugby league competition will be played this weekend on Sunday 31st July 2022 in all the venues mentioned.

The Santos National Football Stadium will host a triple header for Port Moresby fans with the Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers playing the Agmark Rabaul Gurias at 11am.

The local derby between PRK Gulf Isou and the Central Provincial Government backed Central Dabaris will be the second match at 1pm, followed by the main hit out of the day at 3.30pm between the Kroton Hela Wigmen and the Enga Provincial Government sponsored Enga Mioks.

Security will be stepped up for this particular game this Sunday with the current election related issues.

The Lae Rugby League Ground will host a double header between the PRK Mendi Muruks and the Wamp Nga Mt Hagen Eagles at 12.30pm, with the main game between the Lae Snax Tigers and the West New Britain Provincial Government Kimbe Cutters at 3pm.

The Bintangor Goroka Lahanis will host the Jiwaka Provincial Governement Waghi Tumbe in the single fixture at the Sir Danny Leahy Oval at 2pm, with no spectators allowed.

“Hosting franchises are to ensure the games proceed peacefully this weekend in all the three venues with safety for the crowd as the most important element with counting for the National General Elections ongoing in most provinces,” Mr Gairo stressed.

“Crowds are encouraged to leave their political differences behind when going to watch games to ensure all the games are played in a peaceful manner. The PNGRFL as well as the PNGNRLC Boards and management do not tolerate violence in the game as rugby league is not just a game, but a development of young men and women out there who play the game to be developed into good citizens of the nation. Good attitudes are encouraged through the sport of rugby league as well as any other sporting code and the nation calls for good citizens at this critical time of the elections,” he further added.
